25th Evoke: Festival for digital art & culture celebrates its anniversary
From 16 to 18 August 2024 the international demoscene will meet for the 25th edition of Evoke, the festival for digital art and culture in Cologne, Germany. In the AbenteuerHallenKALK location, up to 500 artists from all over the world will be presenting new audiovisual productions to mark the anniversary. The demoscene and its works have been recognised as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO since 2021.
From 16 to 18 August 2024, organiser Digitale Kultur e.V. is expecting up to 500 participants at the 25th Evoke, the Cologne festival for digital art and culture. The international demoscene meets at the three-day event in the AbenteuerHallenKALK location to present new audiovisual digital works. These so-called “demos” are usually several-minute-long, software-generated animation sequences that are calculated and played back in real time – digital art that combines music, videos, graphics and text. The German UNESCO Commission has included the demoscene in the nationwide register of intangible cultural heritage in 2021.
Evoke has been taking place since 1997 and is now considered one of the most important demoscene events in Europe. The festival management is expecting around 100 world premieres of new works for the 25th anniversary. In addition to modern PCs, historical home computers, games consoles and exotic self-developed hardware are also popular platforms. The participants will present their productions to the public on Saturday 17 August in twelve different competition categories. The guests form the jury and vote for the best works. The awards ceremony will take place early Sunday afternoon at the end of the event.
In addition to the festival competitions, the event is rounded off by specialist lectures, seminars and performances by DJs from the demoscene.
