Digital World Heritage: “Demoscene” at Evoke 2023 in Cologne
From 28 to 30 July, the international demoscene will gather at Evoke 2023, the festival for digital culture in Cologne, Germany. In the AbenteuerHallenKALK location, up to 500 artists from all over the world will present new audiovisual productions. The demoscene and its works have been recognised as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO since 2021.
From 28 to 30 July 2023, Digitale Kultur e.V. expects up to 500 participants at Evoke, the Cologne festival for digital culture. At Evoke in the AbenteuerHallenKALK, the international demoscene meets to present new audiovisual digital works. These “demos” are usually animation sequences several minutes long generated by software – digital art that combines music, videos, graphics and text. The German UNESCO Commission has included the demoscene in the nationwide register of intangible cultural heritage in 2021.
Evoke has been held annually since 1997 and is now considered one of the most important demoscene events in Europe. The festival management expects around 100 world premieres of new works. Popular platforms for this are not only modern PCs but also historical home computers, game consoles or exotic self-developed hardware. The participants will present their productions to the audience in five different competition categories on Saturday, 29 July. The guests will form the jury and vote on the best works. The award ceremony will take place on Sunday at noon at the end of the event.
In addition to the festival competitions, various expert lectures, seminars and performances by DJs from the demoscene round off the event.
