UNESCO Heritage in Cologne (Germany): International Festival for Digital Culture “Evoke 2022”
International art festival and party all about the demoscene and digital culture: Evoke 2022 from August 5 to 7 at AbenteuerHallenKALK, Cologne, Germany – The demoscene has been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by the German UNESCO Commission since 2021
Since 2021, the German UNESCO Commission has listed it in the federal register of intangible cultural heritage: the demoscene, the “culture of digital real-time animation”. The demoscene festival Evoke has been active since 1997 and will take place again in Cologne (Germany) next weekend from August 5 to 7, 2022, after a two-year hiatus. In the 25th year of Evoke, organizer Digitale Kultur e.V. expects up to 500 participants and around 100 world premieres of new demoscene productions. The program also includes seminars and panel discussions, for example on “Diskmag” archaeology or the future of the demoscene as a recognized cultural heritage.
The demoscene is an international, decentralized and non-commercial art scene that has been creating digital audiovisual works in the form of computer programs for over 30 years. These so-called “demos” are usually animated sequences several minutes long, generated by software; they combine music, video, text, pixel and 3D graphics.
The artists of the demoscene present their “demos” in competitions at events such as Evoke 2022. Like at a film festival, the productions compete in different categories, but they must be executed in real time during the presentation. At the same time, the competition categories are also characterized by various limitations: For example, some “demos” may not be larger than one or four kilobytes or must be run on certain computers such as the C64 from 1982.
